President's Report - 12th February
Welcome All to another Summer Series, it has been a while between updates, so here is catch up of the series so far. After a busy Summer Break, we are back into racing for the year. The Summer Series will run for the next 10 weeks on Saturday afternoon/evenings, and is sure to challenge all with the new classes for 2011 being tested prior to the commencement of the Spring Series.
Round 1 kicked off early in January, it was great to see such a large attendance. We had nearly full fields in every class, including a large representation of open drivers. For all drivers it was the first time any of us had driven on the new layout, and as challenging as it is, the times fell quickly during the later afternoon session and again that night. A spectacular performance in Open by the current Super Stock Champion Oscar Piastri & Mod Champ, Ryan Maker. 21.5 and 13.5 had full fields with some very close tussles up front, Aaron Van Berkel taking out the honours for 21.5 with Patrick Arena hot on his heels, and Jason Morris closely edging out Gab Bankuti in 13.5.
Round 2 was another big affair, over 30 entrants across the classes, with the temperature getting up there late in the afternoon, it definitley sorted out the brave with tyres starting to go off mid race, and motor temp climbing. Thankfully the clouds and the breeze came through early evening and made the night session much more tolerable. The was some very close racing in both Mini and 21.5 with the winners only making it home in front of second by the slimmest of margins. Patrick Arena took the honours in 21.5, and Mr Consistency Jason Morris closely edging out Gab Bankuti and Nigel George in 13.5. Mini was again a battle between the first 3 places up to the very last corner where it saw Brett Todman take the honours again from Wayne Edwards & Brendan McBain.
Round 3 was another warm day, with plenty of talk about quicker times again on the new layout. There was allot of spectacular racing in both Mini and 21.5. Steve Wyatt & Brendan Mcbain had a brilliant tussle with Steve coming out the winner in the end. Patrick Arena was again the man to catch in 21.5, Both Aaron Van Berkel and Myself spent most of the night trying to catch the new comer Michael Clark, who has finally found the sweet spot with his car setup and was out to Catch Patrick.
Round 4 had limited fields due to the Kroma Cup running over the same weekend. It was however a good chance for some of us to catch up in the points race to the end of the season. There were allot of drivers who have now found there rhythm with the new layout and are starting to bring the class times down even further than earlier in the series. Just how fast they can go, we will have to wait until season's end to find out.
Round 5 was almost cancelled due to the torrential weather on Friday night and again on Saturday morning, but the gods of racing shined down upon us once again, and we managed to get a run. Due to the limited numbers we only ran 2 x classes, 540 & 21.5. With a 9 car 21.5 field, it made for some very fast and close racing. Overall it was an excellent night had by all, and timed well with the rain coming down in the evening moments after we were all packed up and heading home.
With Round 6 on the 12th of Feb looking like it will be another big afternoon, we can well expect another full 21.5 and 13.5 fields. The interest in F1 has also ramped up again, and with the regular 4 drivers likely to be joined by another 4 or 5 competitors, it will make for some close racing in F1 as well.
There have also been a few changes within the committee during the Christmas period, but with the tireless assistance of our long standing Secretary Ted Dexter, it has been a seamless transition.
